AU meme: Gale and Katniss got into the Games. Katniss died.
Gale tries his best to save Katniss and make her win but suddenly Cato is the last one and they are about to win… but Cato throws his sword to Katniss’ stomach just when Katniss shoots him an arrow to his head and Cato dies, but Katniss is hurt and she falls, bleeding, and Gale kneels next to her and begs her to stay with him. He tells her they are coming for them, he tells her they won, because they did: they won because rules changed, but the gamemakers don’t appear, they just… they don’t. And Katniss keeps bleeding and she takes Gale’s free hand (the one that isn’t pressing her stomach) and she says “It’s fine. Just… whatever you do… Gale, don’t let them starve” and Gale shakes his head and Katniss’ hands are shaking and some tears scape from Gale’s eyes: he tries to keep them but he can’t control them. So Katniss’ eyes start getting tired and Gale keeps begging her to stay, to not leave him… but she did: his Catnip stops breathing several minutes later, and Gale starts shaking her “Catnip… Catnip, please… CATNIP, LOOK AT ME!” Gale strokes Katniss’ face with his shaking hands, which are filled with her blood, “Please… Please…” he whispers, but of course she can’t hear him and that’s the moment when Gale realizes…
She’s gone like all those afternoons they spent together in the woods, like those last days they spent in the Arena, taking care of each other…
Gale hits the ground with his hands, furious, but then walks away from her and tries to clean his hands while crying and looking at the sky, like if he was looking at the cameras, yelling “THIS WASN’T SUPPOSED TO END THIS WAY!”, and of course it wasn’t supposed to, because after everything that happened those weeks since they were reaped, all those times they argued because she was mad with him because he volunteered, and then all those smiles and all those times when they whispered ‘I love you’ to each other… After all Gale did to keep her safe… That end was unfair.
And Gale knew that until he died, with a rope around his neck, under a tree in the woods when he turned 30 and Haymitch couldn’t keep him sane anymore.
Gale never wanted money. Gale never wanted a luxurious life. Gale never wanted all those women who visited him at the Capitol.
Gale wanted his Catnip, and he would never get her again.
And it was his fault.
Dedicated to my Uriah on her birthday, Kassandra (it’s tomorrow but well… you know)
